The purpose of this museum is for you to discover the past of the town of Vila Real.
Results of archaeological excavations in Vila Velha, the old part of town, led to the creation of this new museum. Meet the inhabitants and the roots of the region's capital in an exhibition where history is wrapped up in a building of modern maps.
Designed by the architect António Belém Lima, the museum is described as "quiet, hermetic (...) The Museum of Vila Velha appears as mimesis of the granite cliffs that gird the rivers, mimesis of archaeological work. The new associated with the old. The past runs through it like an old tree sap. From the outside we see a compact building, in the interior it seems to levitate over nature and over the ruins. Like a puzzle, this museum opens momentarily to close again soon. "
